Jessica writes funny middle grade fiction. She resides in sunny San Diego with her husband and two daughters. She also doesn’t like to talk about herself in third person because it feels weird.
I started writing for publication in 2014, queried my first manuscript, a contemporary YA in the summer of 2017. In September of 2017, I started writing a middle grade manuscript (which would later sell as STAND UP, YUMI CHUNG), queried it in April 2018. Signed with my agent a month later and sold my book the following month.
I was an AMM mentee in round 2, which means I have personally been on the other end of receiving feedback from a mentor. Trust me, I understand the importance of having a mentor who is a champion for your book. Yes, I will point things out and give suggestions, but more than anything I want to help my mentee find the heart of the story and position it to shine.
My own mentor was such a huge part of my journey to publication, I cannot even imagine what it’d be like to go through this process without one.
I like funny books with a strong emotional core. I like books set in unusual places. I want to meet characters I’ve never seen before. Take me on an adventure and keep me guessing. Lyrical or literary is not the best fit for me. Also, not big on horror or sci-fi but light fantasy is okay.
- Magical Realism/Fabulism
- Urban/Contemporary Fantasy
I WILL PROVIDE:
- Edit Letter (Big Picture developmental feedback)
- Freestyle in chat
I like to give lots of suggestions with the understanding that my mentee will not take them all. I expect it to be starting point to get the writer to rethink the story or line or scene from another perspective and go from there. I do the sandwich method (start with positives, address concerns, end with more encouragement) but I do give my feedback straight (not like “this sucks” but more like “you lost me here”) so I’d like to work with someone who is okay with that.
I’m looking for someone who can take critique without getting I’d like to work with someone who is open, enthusiastic, and hardworking.
- humorous stories
- family stories, love multi-generational stories especially
- high stakes/lots of drama
- #ownvoices of all kinds
