Success Stories

AMM Round 1
Agent: Molly Ker Hawn (Bent Agency)
Debut: ENCHANTÉE, 2019 (Flat Iron/Macmillian)
Mentor: Emily Bain Murphy

Gita says: “A few days before the first round of Author Mentor Match mentees were chosen, I got an email from the organizers asking—very nicely—how I felt about big revisions? The chance to work hard and improve my manuscript was the reason I applied to to AMM, so of course I said yes. My mentor was incredibly generous in both her feedback and her enthusiasm for my manuscript. I revised and revised and revised.

Fast-forward six months—with help from my mentor and members of the AMM community, I started querying. Within a few weeks, I had six offers of representation. I feel incredibly lucky to have found a great agent and be starting this next part of my writing journey. And I would never have got here without AMM. Thank you!”

AMM Round 1
Agent: Kristin Nelson (Nelson Literary)
Debut: THE TIGER AT MIDNIGHT, 2019 (Katherine Tegan/Harper Collins)
Mentor: Axie Oh

Swati says: “After going through a round of deep revisions with Axie I participated in #DVPit and found my agent, Kristin Nelson of Nelson Literary Agency, through it. Author Mentor Match was a crucial part of my journey and gave me a wonderful mentor and community who I still keep in contact with today–two other AMM alumni are now my CPs and I couldn’t be more grateful. As for Axie, I still thank my lucky stars she chose my manuscript and fell in love with those characters. Her input and guidance was invaluable and I couldn’t have done it without her.”

AMM Round 2
Agent: Thao Le (Sanda Dijkstra Literary)
Debut: STAND UP, YUMI CHUNG!, 2020 (Kokila/Penguin Random House)
Mentor: Adrienne Kisner

Jessica says: “For me, AMM is more than just a one-time revision mentorship, it’s an ongoing relationship that continues to this day. Adrienne has been with me step-by-step through the whole thing from the beginning. After getting paired, she helped me whip my manuscript in shape for querying. Every time I got news from the query trenches, both good or bad, Adrienne was the first to hear it. When I decided to shelve my story and write a new one (this time middle grade!) she read and gave me feedback on that one, too. Even beyond the writing, she’s been the one I call on when I have questions about career stuff (contracts, agents, submission procedures, auctions). Who knew there was so much to know? I’m so happy that I applied to AMM, it’s been so valuable to me on my journey to publication.”

AMM Round 3
Agent: Sarah Landis (Sterling Lord)
Mentor: Sean Easley

Julie says: “My mentor, Sean Easley, provided amazing insight on how to take my manuscript to new levels, closer to the book I’ve always dreamed about. Even after providing his feedback, he’s been around for me throughout querying to signing with my agent. I am beyond grateful for Sean and my AMM family!”

I’ve worked with Alexa extensively on crafting my newest manuscript that landed me an agent. I would recommend AMM to any writers who are serious about becoming authors one day, and making lifelong writer friends along the way!”

I’m so glad to have been a part of AMM!”

AMM Round 4
Agent: Kathleen Nishimoto (WME)
Mentor: Rebecca Barrow

Carlyn says: “Becky’s enthusiasm and notes revived my love for my manuscript. Everything she suggested was presented in a way where I both felt her love for the project as well as a deep understanding of how tweaks big and small would change the emotional impact of the book. The revision was quick and efficient, and after throwing a couple tweets around in pitch contests to test the waters, I got my first agent offer 2 weeks after sending the initial query. Within another week or so, I had multiple offers. Becky was right there for the decision and supporting me as I continue to revise with my agent. I’d like to think we’re now stuck with each other, and I’m so happy about it. I honestly believe the manuscript wouldn’t have been discovered by my wonderful agent if not for Becky and AMM, and I’m so thankful!”

AMM Round 1
Agent: Linda Epstein (EMLA)
Mentor: Kat Cho

Sarah says: “Kat went above and beyond as a mentor. Not only did she help me with multiple revision rounds, but she was always there to give me advice on everything from querying to pitching at writing conferences & Twitter contests. I signed with an agent a year and a half after I got into AMM, but throughout that whole time, she was there for me when I needed her and I’m so grateful to have her in my life. There’s an amazing community of writers here and I’m so glad to be a part of it!”

AMM Round 1
Agent: Kiki Nguyen (Donald Maas)
Mentor: Kayla Olson

Alex says: “Author Mentor Match has completely changed my life for the better. In less than a year, it has improved my writing beyond words, taught me how to meet personal deadlines, and helped me revise quickly and efficiently… But perhaps the best part of all, it helped me create an amazing, lasting relationship with my mentor.”

AMM Round 2
Agent: Erica Bauman (Aevitas Creative)
Mentor: Rebecca Barrow

Maggie says: “I was on book five by the time I found Author Mentor Match. Rebecca was the first person to “get” my book the way everyone always dreams someone will, and she completely revived my love for it. We went through a couple rounds of revision, and a few months later I had multiple offers! Becky was there for me every step of the way, and now that I’m in revision with my agent, she’s still there whenever I need her. This book wouldn’t have been THE book without AMM!”

AMM Round 2
Agent: Lindsay Davis Auld (Writer’s House)
Mentor: Sarah Ahiers

Lisa says: “Sarah wrote a ten page editorial letter and reading her feedback confirmed that I had found someone who understood my novel and what I wanted to communicate. Her comments made me laugh but also pushed me to think hard about the best way to tell the story. Sarah’s expertise in questioning my characters wants and needs led her to suggest changing the ending of my story from something that was “good” to something that was heartbreaking but “great.”

Sarah’s help with the querying process was also invaluable. AMM is a fantastic program and I’m forever grateful for the help in reaching my writing goals.”

AMM Round 4
Agent: Kerry D’Agostino (Curtis Brown)
Mentor: Rebecca Phillips

Joan says: “When I was selected for Author Mentor Match, my mentor Rebecca Phillips delivered an edit letter and line edits the very next day. Her vision for the book was exactly what mine was. She reassured me the book did not need a total overhaul, couching her positive praise with critical feedback that whipped my manuscript into shape. She said her editor would give her a month for a revision like she was suggesting. I took exactly a month to cut 10,000 words and add 8,000 words that made it so much stronger. Five days after I started querying, I had an email from an agent who wanted to set up a phone call. Within a week, I had multiple offers. Rebecca championed my experience every step of the way, and was instrumental in my decision-making. I am eternally grateful for the community I’ve built by joining the AMM community!”

AMM Round 3
Agent: Philippa Milnes-Smith (Lucas Alexander Whitley Literary Agency)
Mentor: Julia Lynn Rubin

E.L. says: “Being a part of Author Mentor Match R3 was a life-changing experience. Not only did it give me that final push in my writing, but more importantly, the calibre of mentors gave me utter confidence that I was applying to a top quality programme. This was vital to me because I was, at the time, new to Twitter. My mentor ended up being so supportive, always answered my emails and questions and gave me useful notes and I would now consider her a friend. The support didn’t end there, either. Being from the UK, I had concerns surrounding who to submit to when the time came. I received personal advice from Alexa and another mentor on this side of the pond stepped in to offer advice too. Nine months later, I have just signed with an amazing agent after multiple offers. Would this have happened without AMM? Perhaps… All I know is that I’m where I am now due to a combination of factors and AMM definitely played a HUGE part in that!”

AMM Round 3
Agent: Jordan Hamessley (New Leaf)
Mentor: Jaime Olin

Jordan says: “I was chosen as a mentee in November 2017, a new and nervous writer with a book I desperately wanted to be THE book. I was ready to put in the work but I was as at a point where I couldn’t see what work needed to be done anymore. Enter Jaime Olin, the amazing mentor who “got” my book and helped me shape it into what I’d dreamed it could be. Jaime read my book multiple times before sending me her first edit letter, and again between every revision. She was always available to answer questions, talk through plot points and brainstorm. With each revision, not only did my book get stronger, but so did my writing as a whole! In June 2018, I started querying and ended up having multiple offers of representation. Jaime was there to talk through every step of the process with me and I’m ecstatic to say that we’re now agent siblings!”
